In the morning on 4th November, professor Darren Walters who teaches Music Industry Program at Drexel University delivered a lecture about his label running experience at the First International Music Industry Forum held this week at Communication University of China.
Regarding the first part of the lecture, professor Walters mainly talked about his experiences on setting up his own record labels. He organized a Punk band when he was a teen, then he thought it was time to put up his own band. This was the incentive he had to establish his own record label, which was Hi Impact. Meanwhile, he briefly introduced the basic elements a company needed to consider in order to start an entrepreneurship: legal name, business plan, signing artists, funding, licenses and business partners. The result turned out that the company sold a quantity of records during the period. Subsequently, Darren started a new record label called Jade Tree. Jade Tree was much different from the previous company for the following reasons: they signed artist from multiple genres; they started making formal contracts instead of handshake deal; they began to have their own partner company Mordam Records and distributor ADA; they were handling relationships with concert promoters, personal managers and venues. Those significant changes had led significant amount of profits to Jade Tree. During the first part of the lecture, students asked questions from multiple sides and gained great corresponding answers.
In terms of the second part of the lecture, professor Walters mainly talked about the information of Music Industry Program he taught, including the program philosophy, campus facilities and Mad Dragon Music Group. MDMG is the core competitive edge that the program has over other similar programs operating by other universities. MDMG is a group modeling Universal, Sony and Warner. Mad Dragon Music Publishing, Mad Dragon Media, Mad Dragon Live, Mad Dragon Records, Mad Dragon Artists Management are the subsidiaries of the group. The major purpose of establishing such a group is to help students attain more practical lessons apart from classrooms. The group is ran by all the students, almost every subsidiary company is operated by fifteen students. They obtained funding from university and have experienced decades to be successful. Professor Walters used specific albums put up by the group as examples to explain how the group has gone through the previous years. The funding for the group mainly came through four ways: summer programs, money saved from last year, AY operating and sales.
Lastly, professor Walters asked students whether they had ever though about the entrepreneurship, which truly incite students to think more about the future of they own and the music industry.
