On Nov. 6th 2014, The First Music Industry Forum 2014 was held successfully. In the meeting hall of Communication University of China’s new International Communication Center, Professor Gilles Demonet from the French gave an impressive speech titled “Strengths and challenges for a development of a concert market between China and Europe” sharing his professional experience about the future of Chinese concert market.
Professor Gilles Demonet is a musicology of the Paris Sorbonne University. He is a member of the research Center IREMUS, and a guest professor of Shanghai Conservatory of Music, and one of the founder of the Burletta Theatre of Paris. He is the Head of the Music Management Department of Sorbonne, in charge of international projects with Abu Dhabi, China, and Estonia. He has rich experiences and a lot of academic achievement in the area of music market and economic management in Europe. His major works include ‘The European Music Market’, ‘How to build up an artistic career in Europe and so on. His symposiums include ‘To Manage a Concert Hall’, ‘The European Music Market and so on.
Professor Gilles Demonet according to his years of teaching and practice experience, expounded his views on the development of China concerts in the Europe, affirmed the position of Chinese performance, also analyzes some problems and puts forward some suggestions on the future development of China concert market. First, the concert is a very special economic good, its production requires high costs, both fixed and variable, these means that some funding mechanisms have to be put in place. China has now a complete music ecosystem for concerts that has been built up gradually since the 1980s,but some obstacles also remain, like the Chinese cultural model, the Chinese cultural policy and their subtle changes, the lack of real autonomy and so on. China is now a key player in the production and reproduction of European music, whether manufactured products such as instruments and high-tech equipment or training of musicians, but China still needs to build their own programming modes.
At last, Professor Gilles Demonet expounded his reflections on the future of China concert market. The concert has to adapt in order to reach wider and more various audience. Then, while Europe is struggling with serious economic difficulties, China sometimes seems to be a huge market opportunity. For sure, China has all assets to be also a competitor in concerts industry and deserves to be respected. In order to achieve this, there is also a need for a better mutual understanding of music contents, of operating methods. The right way of research and education cooperation are to make this more effective in a long-lasting way.
